Customary Initiation Bill (B7b-2018)

  1. The Customary Initiation Bill has been ongoing from 2018 to regulate key areas such as initiation of schools and practitioners with the aim of safety in cultural practices which affect diverse communities.
  2. The Minority Front supports this Bill as a progressive bill and would like to see more consultation with all communities as the regulations are framed, as there are also various initiation practices amongst various ethnic groups in the Indian communities just like the black Africans communities.
  3. Furthermore, it is our duty to bring about awareness about this Customary Initiation Bill and its protective measures.
  4. As legislators, it is important to ensure that the relevant governance structures are established and various practices monitored and reported on.
  5. Finally, the fees charged for practices must be carefully regulated so that there is uptake of our culture and tradition which in diverse peoples fulfils their spiritual and social well-being.
  6. The Minority Front supports this Bill.
