Debate on 16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence and Child Abuse

  1. Hon. members, I’ve just attended a pre-cursor event to a Gender-Based Violence (GBV) summit being held by the LGBTQIA community.
  2. It was with immense sadness that I listened to the grave challenges these vulnerable groups face, in terms of GBV, many times even by our SAPS members. These members need awareness programmes.
  3. The Minority Front calls on the Department of Social Development and the Office of the Premier to ensure that a “one-stop safety centre” is built for these communities in each district.
  4. As Hon. members, we must fast-track the setting up of the special gender courts to deal with social-ills affecting vulnerable women, children, the disabled and the LGBTQIA communities.
  5. If statistics are anything to go by, especially gathered due to COVID-19 lockdown measures, which unfortunately in South Africa is ongoing, has as per Gallup Law and Order Index 2020, ranked S.A among the unsafest countries in the world-as citizens live in fear.
  6. The question arises, how do we paint a new picture as elected Honourable representatives of our people; we are a capable “think-tank” but we must engage with civil society organisations like the DDP and our tertiary institutions to craft policies and programmes which will have positive behaviour change outcomes.
  7. Finally, the Minority Front calls for the Moral Regeneration Movement must now be headed by the Commission on Gender Equality (CGE). This has been headed by men for too long. This will bring faster changes for women and children.
  8. Thank you.
