Debate on the ANC 3rd Party Motion

Posted in: on 27/07/2023 | Categorised as , ,

  1. Thank you Hon. Speaker and Hon. Sonjica, thank you for bringing this timely discussion by way of the ANC party debate.
  2. Usually school violence was discussed by other parties and led to an Indaba few years ago when school safety committees were formed. This arose due to learners carrying drugs and weapons to schools. “Sugars” was rife.
  3. These committees were functioning well with resources and monitoring.
  4. Today the culture of violence in schools is exacerbated by TikTok challenges and other social media where challenges or games go viral. Artificial intelligence, used for reform purposes must never be ruled out. Many would want to see South Africa, ungovernable.
  5. Foreign donors to school projects had withdrawn support a few years ago because politicians were facing domestic voter wrath as they put it “seeing their dollars go down in flames”.
  6. Therefore, an Indaba is supported by the Minority Front, with full representation of all stakeholders, especially SAPS, school management teams, school governing bodies, parents and RCL members.
  7. Policy planners in education and safety and security need to be present.
  8. Other contradictory legislation needs review like increasing learner age to 21 years and decreasing the legal age to consume alcohol to 18 years.
  9. Economic development needs to ensure that taverns are not on streets where there are schools.
  10. The culture of community gangsterism needs eradication.
  11. Thank you.
