New Documentary Bengal Tiger – The Rajbansi Story Set to Illuminate the Life of a South African Political Icon
Durban, South Africa — Bengal Tiger – The Rajbansi Story, a powerful new documentary directed by acclaimed filmmaker Arish Sirkissoon, is set for release, offering an unprecedented look into the life and legacy of Amichand Rajbansi—one of South Africa’s most influential and complex political figures.
Affectionately known as the “Bengal Tiger”, Rajbansi rose from humble beginnings to become a dominant force within South Africa’s political system during both apartheid and democracy. This documentary chronicles his journey with depth and sensitivity, providing insight into a man who inspired admiration, provoked debate, and left a lasting mark on the national landscape.
Crafted through years of meticulous research, the film features compelling interviews with a wide range of voices including political leaders, historians, journalists, and community figures who knew or studied Rajbansi. While his children were approached for participation, their professional commitments did not permit availability. The film remains committed to neutrality, presenting a fair and balanced view of Rajbansi’s legacy.
Produced in collaboration with Shameen Thakur-Rajbansi, the late leader’s wife, the film is both a personal tribute and a broader reflection on the Indian South African experience under apartheid—a vital story rarely explored in mainstream media.
With its bold visual style, emotive storytelling, and rich historical context, Bengal Tiger – The Rajbansi Story is poised to spark national conversation. Plans are underway for theatrical release across South Africa, followed by international festival screenings and global digital distribution.
“This film is about more than one man—it’s about identity, resilience, and the power of representation,” says director Arish Sirkissoon. “It’s time we tell the stories that have been sidelined for too long.”
