School Closure To Be Addressed With MEC

Minority Front Leader, Mrs Shameen Thakur Rajbansi has expressed concern over closure of some twenty schools in KZN. The recent media reports have caused chaos in local schools and communities.

“As a member of the Education portfolio Committee I am fairly aware of the processes that need to be followed for school closure, especially where the Transformation Policy is concerned. One fundamental and  primary objective is to gain consensus through consultation with all stakeholders,” said Thakur Rajbansi

“Of particular concern is Stanmore Primary School in Phoenix. It is my understanding that the school is to merge with a neighbouring school. However it must be known that this can only take place after both School Management Teams, their SGB’s and parents have been consulted with. There must also be a prior arrangement made for the use of the school but the community needs must be given priority. Schools such as Stanmore Primary, which have raised public objections must be given the right to voice their concerns with the department. The school is not only home to learners but also houses the cleaning staff and scholar patrol. The closure will have adverse effects on the non-teaching staff as well. I will therefore table the matter is discussed with the MEC to ensure  that the correct procedures are followed,” She said
